The Lieutenant of Inishmore

MCG Artistic Director Michael Grandage directs stage and screen actor Aidan Turner in The Lieutenant of Inishmore, Martin McDonagh’s critically acclaimed, brilliant satire on terrorism.

Mad Padraic may be a terrorist deemed too violent to be a member of the IRA, but he has one weakness: he loves his cat more than anything in the world. When he returns from bombing and torturing in Northern Ireland to find that his cat has been run over on the island of Inishmore, Mad Padraic will be seeking some answers to the fate of Wee Thomas.

Best known for playing the title role in BBC’s hit series Poldark, Aidan Turner plays mad Padraic in this hilarious, acute observation of violence in contemporary culture. The production comes on the heels of Michael Grandage’s award-winning production of another McDonagh play, The Cripple of Inishman, in 2013.

  • Making McDonagh Proud

    21 July 2018

This excellent staging of McDonagh's play (with stand-out parts played by Aidan Turner, Charlie Murphy and Chris Walley) proved how excellent timing and acting can allow a comedy as horrid as this to create uproaring laughter from murder. I hope I have the chance to see this rendition of the play on video back in the U.S.

  • A truly black comedy!

    20 July 2018

I never thought I would laugh so at the actions in this play but humour overwhelmed the darkness. Teamwork showed in the casting.

  • "This is comedy at its blackest... McDonagh's real gift is for pushing a situation to its most brutal extreme, and being funny with it."

    The Guardian

  • Put it this way - when the 35-year-old heartthrob (Aidan Turner) makes his entrance, there's an explosion of applause."

    The Telegraph

  • "A savagely funny satirical farce on the terrorist mentality. Turner does it proud with a performance that shows a masterful command of its Synge-meets-Tarantino tone. "
