Sacrifice by Iceland Dance Company is a spectacle of dance, art and film created in collaboration with visual artists Ragnar Kjartansson and Matthew Barney.
Part dance, part ballet, part rock concert, part film – Sacrifice spills from the stage into an immersive 'market' environment in the foyer spaces of Royal Festival Hall.
It is a festival of common things made holy, inspired by ideas around ritual, religion and art.
'We’ve always been looking for something to believe in, something that we could call ours. Now, at last, we may have found it. Actually, it was staring us in the face all along: Art.'
The works in Sacrifice include:
Shrine: A dance celebrating life and death choreographed by Erna Ómarsdóttir in collaboration with the dancers of the company
No Tomorrow: A ballet for eight dancers and eight guitars to the music by The National’s Bryce Dessner. Created by performance and visual artist Ragnar Kjartansson and choreographer Margrét Bjarnadóttir.
Union of the North: A performative video installation that fuses together themes of consumerism and spirituality. Created by renowned American visual artist Matthew Barney, choreographer Erna Ómarsdóttir and musician Valdimar Jóhannsson.
