Stepping Out

Amanda Holden stars in the stellar cast of Stepping Out, a wonderful and heart-warming comedy.

In an attempt to tap away their troubles, seven women and one man join a weekly dancing class. After a shaky start, the group is barely getting to grip with the basics when they are asked to participate in a charity gala…

Each member of the group has a story to tell, from haughty Vera, mouthy Maxine and uptight Andy to bubbly Sylvia and shy Dorothy; eager Lynne and cheerful Rose and, of course, Geoffrey.

Directed by triple Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman, the cast also includes Angela Griffin, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Nicola Stephenson and Tamzin Outhwaite. Stepping Out won the Evening Standard Comedy of the Year Award, 1984 and was also made into a musical which became a film in 1991, starring Julie Walters and Liza Minnelli.

  • Not a 'Musical'

    20 March 2017

Not bad, but not exactly what I was expecting, and therefore a tad disappointing. This version is a play with a little music and dancing thrown in. There exists a version, by the same author, Richard Harris, which is a musical. That's the one I thought I was seeing, and alas I was wrong. Still a good evening out though.

  • Well acted and produced.

    20 March 2017

Really enjoyed the matinee performance on 4 March. Company were professional, hit their marks and made us laugh or feel their emotions. Amanda Holden got the most laughs with her portrayal of the somewhat OCD Vera. Dominic Rowan was excellent as the hapless only man. The rest of the cast were brilliant. It was good to see some familiar faces from TV. Sorry not to see Tamzin Outhwaite as billed, because of her injury. All round a lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon in London (and on my birthday)!
